Cinque Terre Italy

Corniglia is perched on top of a rocky promontory surrounded by vineyards and the Ligurian Sea. It is the only Cinque Terre village not having access to the sea. To reach the village from the station you can take the bus or climb the Lardarina, a long stairway that connects the station to the centre. Below we have listed some things to see and what to do in Corniglia.

Visit the historic center of Corniglia

The village's ancient core is characterized by narrow alleys and typical Ligurian colorful houses. Follow the main alley Via Freschi to the main square Largo Taragio. On this leafy and mellow piazzetta you will find some nice restaurants, the lovely Oratory of Santa Caterina and the memorial to the soldiers of World War I.

Corniglia, la terrazza di Santa Maria

The terrace of Santa Maria

Continue along via Fieschi to the end and the beautiful St Mary's terrace. Here you will find the panoramic bar La Terza Terra; a perfect place for an aperitivo at sunset. From here you can enjoy wonderful views of the entire Cinque Terre coastline.

St. Peter's Church

La Chiesa di San Pietro is dedicated to San Pietro, the patron saint of Corniglia. This interesting church features a lovely rose window of white Carrara marble, two beautiful stained glass windows behind the high altar, a 12th century baptismal font and an interesting polyptich.
San Pietro was built in 1334 on the site of an 11th century chapel and is a wonderful example of the Ligurian Gothic style.

Corniglia, la scalinata della Lardarina

La scalinata Lardarina

The Lardarina is the 377-step brick staircase which climbs from the Corniglia train station to the village. If you plan to start your hike immediately upon reaching Corniglia, then you will first have to climb this stairway. There is also a shuttle bus from the station up to Corniglia.

The hiking path from Corniglia a Vernazza

Hike the trail from Corniglia to Vernazza (1,5h). Take a break halfway at Prevo, 208 metres above sea level, and the bar "Il Gabbiano" with fantastic sea views serving delicious lemon granitas.
