Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola, with its multicolored houses hidden high in the hills overlooking the sea, is one of the most picturesque and charming of all the five Cinque Terre villages. In this guide you will discover the best things to do in Manarola.

1. Hang out in the small natural harbor

The lovely harbor area is filled with colorful rowing boats and it becomes the main sunbathing and swimming spot of the village from morning until dusk.

2. Take a wander through the village

Follow the main street street Via Renato Birolli which is home to the majority of restaurants, shops, and cafes.

3. Aperitivo al Nessun Dorma

The wine bar Nessun Dorma is one of the most popular aperitivo bars in Cinque Terre, located at the highest point in the village, with the best view.

4. Hike the trail from Manarola to Corniglia

One of the best ways to appreciate the Cinque Terre is on a hike. From Manarola, follow the steep uphill trail to Volastra, or take the shuttle bus up, and then follow the trail through the terraced vineyards, 400 meters above sea level. This is one of the the most beautiful, and challenging, hiking trails in the region. More information: Cinque Terre hiking trails.

5. Go on a vineyard walk

There are vineyards all over Cinque Terre. You will come across many of them if you hike around the region. The terrain is rocky and steep, yet the wines produced in this region are outstanding. If you want to visit some vineyards while in Manarola, you can go on a panoramic vineyard walk. It’s an easy 20-minute hike starting above the cemetery in Manarola with stairs up the hill. The path passes along beautiful vineyards that overlook the village and the sea and you will end up near the San Lorenzo church.

6. La chiesa di San Lorenzo

The church of St. Lawrence was dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was built in the early part of the 14th century in Gothic Style. The interiors are richly decorated and the charm is still intact. The brass relief designs on the arch are the symbols of the martyrdom of St. Lawrence. Some of the highlights are the altars, the rose window with 12 small columns and the very old Bell Tower which was earlier used for defense.
