You will only need the card if you are hiking the blue trail between Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia. All other trails are free. The card costs €18,20 a day for an adult and includes the two trails and unlimited train travel with the Cinque Terre Express trains. In comparison a single train ticket costs €5 per journey if bought point-to-point.
Here is some useful information of the Cinque Terre Card validity:
Small dogs, cats and other pets that are kept in carriers, no bigger than 70 x 30 x 50 cm, travel for free in first and second class on all the different types of trains in Italy.
On all regional trains, even those not marked with the special symbol, passengers are permitted to travel with a fully closed folding bicycle (even if not in the special bag) free of charge, provided that the size does not exceed 110 x 80 x 45 cm and does not cause danger or inconvenience to other passengers.
